Size mark on Le Creuset Dutch Oven / 395 original Views / Last Updated January 20, 2018
Please note, size designations have changed over the years. An older piece of Le Creuset may or may not meet the following requirements. General guide to the sizing currently in use for Le Creuset round Dutch Ovens
I regularly get questions regarding the letters which appear on some older pieces of their cookware. After doing some research, I was able to find the following information at http://www.kitchenexperiments.net . An honest writer always attributes their sources. :-)
Here is what their site says: "Le Creuset has changed how they note the size of their pots a few times over the last, oh, 50 years or so. There was a letter, then a diameter in centimeters, and now they list a quart size.”
“Unfortunately, there is no capacity marking continuity across product lines. A pot with a handle marked #22 may not be the same size or hold the same amount as a round or oval Dutch oven marked #22.” Be aware that a #22 round Dutch oven made in 1980 may not have the same capacity as a #22 round Dutch oven made in 2005! Their article continues: "Here's an easy key to keep track of what's what. This is for the ROUND French Ovens only.”
